Pre-Delivery window can make or brake your retention
The 3 to 5 days between order and delivery are when most brands go silent, and when buyer’s remorse kicks in.
There is a window that lasts a couple of days that can make or brake how people perceive your product.
It’s the pre-delivery window. The time period from the moment the customer places an order to the moment they receive it.
For most brands, that is usually around 3 to 5 days.
And that’s the exact period when most brands go completely silent.
They usually send one automated confirmation email and maybe a generic discount if the person buys again immediately.
I’ll explain why that’s the wrong way to do it.
You’re still earning their trust
It might seem like the job is done because they’ve already bought.
But in reality, buyers are still questioning their decision and asking themselves questions like:
- Is it worth the money?
- Will it work for me?
This is buyer’s remorse, and it kicks in fast.
Your job as a retention marketer isn't just to hunt for the next sale. Your job is to:
- Increase the perceived value of the product
- Remove skepticism
The better you answer the objections circling in their heads, the higher the chance of them adopting your product properly once it arrives and staying a customer long-term.
How we do it at Optimail
Instead of trying to force a second purchase 5 minutes after the first one, use this window to build a premium post-purchase experience.
Here is the exact strategy:
✅ Collect zero-party data early
Send a simple question or a quick survey in your initial post-purchase thank you email. Show them that you care, but more importantly, collect valuable data about their expectations and main goals that you can use later on to personalize their experience.
✅ Deliver digital value
Give them access to exclusive resources. If you are a supplement or food brand, send them a digital recipe book tailored to what they bought. This costs you nothing in margin but spikes the perceived value.
✅ Deploy specific social proof
Based on the data you get from your post-purchase survey, send a highly specific customer testimonial email. Feature someone who had the exact same initial problems and achieved great results. This tackles the objection "Will it work for me?" and reduces skepticism.
✅ Drive non-salesy traffic
Have educational blogs on your website or video guides on YouTube? Send people over there to consume content that helps them prepare for the product arrival.
Whatever you do, focus on helping them get the absolute most out of what they bought.
If you want to fix your customer lifetime value, stop looking only at your welcome flow. Look at what happens right after the first purchase.
This time window is crucial for every CPG brand.
Be creative, help your customers adopt the product, but whatever you do, don't go silent.
